Greenbank Strength and Performance: Train Smart - look at your recovery.

Sleep.

We’ve been talked to about it when we were kids, totally and completely blew it off as young adults, and longed for it during those early years of parenthood.

These days, I maintain my loyalty to the midday nap.  Whether or not it happens is another story.  More recently the parents in this family have been making a concerted and conscious effort to get at least 7 hours of sleep each night.  With early morning workouts this means early to bed, which cuts into my “Me” time in the evening when the kids go to bed. And I'll be honest, I'm not always happy about that - but let's look at the big picture here.

With more and more research results being published on the effects of sleep on the body – specifically when not enough sleep occurs," Hitting the sack early" is turning into the answer to “If I got only one thing right about this day.”

How much sleep you get affects you all the way down to the cellular level.

The cellular level!

Think muscle recovery, Central Nervous System recovery from the day's lifting session, nutrition replenishing, etc.

The short term and long term effects of not enough sleep are significant beyond just dealing with your cranky needs-a-nap self.  You’re setting yourself up for illness and disease down the road when in  a sleep deficit.  And that road is shorter than you'd think.

Interestingly, they’ve got numbers explaining the likelihood of auto crashes based off 6 hrs of sleep (Spoiler: it’s bad).  Sleep research isn't new, people are just paying more attention lately.

And, it's fascinating.

Is anyone else cringing when thinking back on all those sleep deprived days and nights over the course of their life.  Or, this week, or yesterday...

Sleep hygiene:  it’s a thing.  Setting “the mood” for good, quality sleep.  Eliminating extraneous light sources, creating that bedtime, wind down ritual, etc.

Figure out what works for you to make this happen people!

To provide an immense amount of insight check out this easy to listen to podcast.  Hang in there people, as it is not short but well worth the time you invest.  Well, worth it.
